The pthreads method to do this is to lock a mutex with pthread_mutex_lock (). In the child, you will only have one thread -- the one that called fork (). Don't do anything but call async-signal-safe calls after the fork and before the exec. Since the thread pool will be restricted to 4 threads and all 4 threads will start a process and then wait for it, you'll be certain there won't be more than 4 child processes running.
